The trailer for Netflix’s space thriller Stowaway, starring Anna Kendrick, Toni Collette, and Daniel Dae Kim, gives a glimpse at a dangerous mission.

Netflix has released the first official trailer for its upcoming space thriller Stowaway. Anna Kendrick (Pitch Perfect), Toni Collette (Hereditary), Daniel Dae Kim (Lost), and Shamier Anderson (Wynonna Earp) are set to star in the survival film as they journey to Mars to try and cultivate life on the Red Planet. Anderson’s character, Michael, plays the titular stowaway, a launch plan engineer who is unwittingly launched into space with the rest of the crew after being knocked unconscious during lift off.

Kendrick stars as Zoe, the ship’s medical researcher alongside Kim’s biologist. Collette is Marina Barnett, the commander of the space craft who is tasked with deciding what to do when the ship’s life support system malfunctions and becomes capable of only supporting three of the people on board. Stowaway is directed by Brazilian filmmaker Joe Penna, who also helmed Arctic, another survival thriller starring Mads Mikkelsen.

Penna is going off-planet this time, and the first trailer from Netflix previews what’s in store for the small ensemble as they try to figure out how they will survive their journey to Mars. The trailer starts off innocent enough as Michael acclimates to his new role as a member of the ship’s crew, but things go south when the oxygen systems malfunction. Only three of them will be able to survive the journey to Mars, and the crew must decide whether to turn back or try to find another way to survive the years long journey to Mars. Check out the full clip below:

Penna has assembled quite the ensemble for the film, and it will be interesting to see them navigate the tense situation and the interesting moral quandary at the center of the film. Space survival films are a common genre, but Stowaway looks to be leaning heavily into the drama surrounding the situation rather than veering into hard sci-fi territory. The crew will have to decide whether or not to continue on their mission and, for the three who were meant to be on board, continue with their life’s work.

Stowaway looks to have its fair share of action, though. Towards the end of the trailer, Kendrick’s character looks to be attempting to solve the problem at hand by going out of the ship and navigating a terrifying space walk. Whether Stowaway can live up to some of the truly terrifying space films released in recent years, including Sandra Bullock’s Oscar winning Gravity, remains to be seen, but viewers will find out when the film hits Netflix on April 22.
